Chapter Nine
Still in her yoga pants and tank top, Avery jogged from her bedroom to the door. Through the glass panel, she saw a bright blue golf cart parked in the middle of the driveway. And there stood a little boy.
She opened the door. âGood morning.â
âHi. Iâm Nico.â His dark black hair shone in the morning sun, making it look nearly blue. âIs my uncle around?â
âHe is. Come on in.â The young boy zipped under her arm and right by her, making a beeline for the living room.
Drew walked out of the steam room at the other end of the hall wearing a robe. âHey, buddy. I didnât hear you come in.â
âMom said I could come over today.â
âYeah. Thatâs great.â They high-fived. âDid you meet my friend?â
Nico lifted his chin. âShe let me in.â
âAvery. This is my nephew, Nico.â He leaned close to Nicoâs ear. âSheâs in better shape than the two of us put together.â
The little boy looked impressed.
âSheâs helping me get ready for next season, and when we were talking last night, we were thinking maybe you could do some workouts with me in the pool.â
âMaybe even some water basketball or volleyball, which Iâm pretty good at,â Avery bragged.
Drew shrugged and nudged his nephew. âGame on, right?â
âYeah!â Nico had the biggest brown eyes sheâd ever seen. Heâd be a heartbreaker one day. Especially with someone like Drew Laskin as an uncle, who was known to be one of the most eligible bachelors in the league. She could still kick herself for not recognizing him.
âI have to do some stretches and stuff, or sheâll write me up.â
Avery opened the curtains. âNico, you can help me get breakfast ready if youâd like.â
âIâm good at helping in the kitchen.â
Drew slapped the wall as he headed into the gym. âSee you two in a bit.â
âTake your time. Slow, long stretches, like I showed you last night,â Avery reminded him.
âIâm a fast learner.â
âMom says Uncle Drew never listens.â
âDoes she now?â Avery gave Drew a knowing look. âI had barely noticed. Weâll trust him to do it right. Letâs go get breakfast ready.â
Nico followed her into the kitchen. âCan you can get the fresh fruit and yogurt out of the fridge, please?â She gathered the whole grain bread and natural peanut butter. Mid-day, sheâd make egg-white omelets with spinach and sprouts.
Nico toasted the bread while she cut up fruit, making pretty parfaits that were probably a waste of effort on these two, but she liked it served up this way. Pretty always tasted better.
âAre you excited about Christmas?â She was just making conversation, but she regretted bringing it up knowing all the drama about the holiday plans. It had just slipped out. Kids and Christmasâ¦they just went together.
âYes.â He bounced with enthusiasm. âNow that schoolâs out, itâs almost here.â
âDo you think youâre on Santaâs nice list?â
âDefinitely. I have some friends in school that might not be, but I know I am.â
âMe, too,â she said. âI love Christmas. Itâs my favorite time of the whole year.
